What Happens during a Clinical Hypnotherapy Session
Online Hypnosis has a fair amount of mystery surrounding it. This is mainly due to entertainment and media misinformation. One of the most important jobs I have as a clinical hypnotherapist is taking the mystery out of hypnosis for my clients, prospective clients and the general public.
What happens during each online session is specific to the client. Each session is tailored to the needs of each client. Having worked with hundreds of hypnotherapy clients over 24 years in this profession, I can tell you that based on that experience, clients come to get results.
I am committed to being warm, compassionate, and kind to my clients. However, that doesn’t mean that I am going to feel sorry for you or ask you to go into minute detail about things. I aim to help you to be free of your specific habits, behaviors, and emotions that are holding you back and to provide you with coping skills and strategies to help you move forward. You may find me direct at times, my role as a therapist is to challenge clients to elicit change.
The Pretalk
The online appointment begins with a brief interview with Lorna asking questions about the client’s problems and their life, traumas, and their goals. Some of these questions may take the client out of their comfort zone and be confronting but they are necessary and help the hypnotherapist to formulate the hypnotherapy session which is tailored to each client.
Before the online session, Lorna explains what will happen during the hypnosis process, how the mind works, subconscious and conscious minds, and how hypnotherapy works.
The Hypnosis Induction
The hypnosis induction is the next part and the client is made to feel safe and comfortable in the reclining chair. The light is dimmed, and this process takes the client into that very relaxed high-learning state known as hypnosis. Hypnosis occurs through a specific type of hypnotic conversation that leads the client into a hypnotic state.
If you want to understand hypnotic inductions, and how they work there are many videos you can watch on YouTube. It is not the hypnotherapist’s role to explain how hypnotic inductions work, that is a technical time-consuming process suitable only for students of hypnosis.
The entire time during the induction and while in that very relaxed state clients may hear everything and be aware of everything that is taking place. Most people find that being hypnotized is an extremely relaxing and pleasurable experience.
There are a number of different types of hypnosis inductions. Which one is used depends on what is suitable for the client. Some inductions are quite quick, while others may take 15 or 20 minutes. Once again, everything in the session is guided by the needs of the client.
Once the initial hypnosis induction is complete, deepening techniques are used that allow the client to enter a deeper level of relaxed trance if needed (deeper is not always better).
The Therapy
This is where the change work takes place. It may be where we go through the process needed to help you to release weight, becoming a non-smoker, overcoming fear of public speaking or something else.
The therapy that is done is only what you have decided at the beginning of the session that you want. We usually work on changing one issue at a time. Some types of therapy used are suggestion therapy and other times if required regression therapy is used.
Transition to Wakeful Awareness
The final portion of the session is to simply bring you out of your trance. This is a gentle, orderly process. You will be able to drive home as there are no side effects.
